Re: Pro Wrestling
There’s no live video for this one but he came out with some mad stuff. They were just outrageous heels and it was a lot funnier than it is now, JBL is a brilliant parody of a lot of American cowboy type people

Re: Pro Wrestling
People did question some of the stuff they did at the time. Sky TV cut out the Vince/Trish barking segment, parts of the Katie Vick angle, and women being put through tables. UPN banned the Muhammed Hassan character. The Eugene character raised a lot of eyebrows, especially since it was speculated that it was based on a real life kid who hung out backstage at WWF events in the 80s.TheMalteseDart wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 10:44 pm I can’t remember, I was about 9 when I watched wrestling, but when I look back at old clips there were definitely storylines and comments from wrestlers and commentators they’d never get away with now.
Just off the top of my head there was a segment with JBL at the Mexican border, bra and panties matches, Vince McMahon doing a segment at a UK wwe event which was just blatantly racist.
The outrageous stuff they used to say and do was what made it funny, understandably wouldn’t go down at all today but nobody questioned it at the time
A lot of the outrageous stuff they did was actually pretty shit imo. The Katie Vick angle was terrible for example. It came across as desperate rather than shocking.

Re: Pro Wrestling
JBL was a great talker and actually a bit underrated in the ring. His match with Eddie at Judgement Day 2004 is one of my favourite bouts ever.TheMalteseDart wrote: ↑Wed Mar 06, 2024 10:48 pm They were just outrageous heels and it was a lot funnier than it is now, JBL is a brilliant parody of a lot of American cowboy type people
The character actually wasn't very successful though. Some couldn't get over him previously being a mid-carder for a decade.

Nice to see a backstage beat down and a bit of blood at the end, rock has been tremendous since he turned heel.

Re: Pro Wrestling
He was always better as a heel
Specifically a heel as “Hollywood Rock”

Nobody would expect it happening, be one of the biggest swerves ever. Obviously I don't think this will happen

They tried having him as a face after The Shield were no longer a group and it failed miserablyDfc180 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 7:19 pmNobody would expect it happening, be one of the biggest swerves ever. Obviously I don't think this will happen
One huge factor that drove me away from watching

Wrestlers can thrive in roles at certain stages of their career, but not in other stages.

Re: Pro Wrestling
There is a belief on some forums that the Hollywood Rock character was a flop due to the low buyrates for WM19 and Backlash 03.
It ignores that the marketing for WM19 was centred around the Hogan vs Vince bout and the Iraq War ongoing during that period.
That character would have drawn very well had it appeared in another era, specifically against Austin.

Re: Pro Wrestling
This. Although his style of wrestling doesn't suit him being a face really, a lot of his matches can be a bit dullsennafan24 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 27, 2024 7:44 pmWrestlers can thrive in roles at certain stages of their career, but not in other stages.
