Re: The Olympics
It’s getting the crowds in that’s difficult. What did cricket have in Australia 50 per cent attendance?

A few places called it earlier but the IOC have denied it.

Re: The Olympics
Even behind closed doors they would do something surely
To go 8 years with no Olympics
With all the funding that's thrown at it

Re: The Olympics
Would have to be scaled back massively though. With no ticket revenue and no tourists, it will cost a fortune.

Re: The Olympics
Rio lost $2 billion. If you run a full scale Olympics with Testing, Quarantine and Limited or no ticket sales, it will send Japan broke.Randall wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 12:01 pmNike, coke etc would still chuck huge piles of cash at it.Captain Hobo wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 11:58 amWould have to be scaled back massively though. I'd honestly never even considered the finances
Has it always been in profit before?

Re: The Olympics
It varies of course, London apparently broke even. Sydney and Athens made big losses. It also depends how much you need to build and what it can be used for after the Games.Randall wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 12:14 pmTo the outside world it's just a festival of sportCaptain Hobo wrote: ↑Fri Jan 22, 2021 12:08 pmRio lost $2 billion. But the cost has risen massively in recent times and the TV revenue comparatively has not kept up.
I know when they announced 2024 in Paris and 2028 in LA, that was because they were literally the only 2 cities that bid. There are not many other places in the world that could consider hosting one these days. Boston considered a bid for 2024 and this tweet pretty much sums up the reaction.

I'd never given it any thought but with all the commercial activity I'm surprised

Re: The Olympics
Gotta feel for the athletes the most through all of this, many train their whole lives to peak for 1 or maybe 2 olympics, to miss out on one would be heartbreaking. It's the only time i'd happily sit and watch something like handball if it was on, good to see other sports and gives people a chance to make a name for themselves on the world stage
Fear the worst for it going ahead though
