Taylor might be wearing eyeliner.
Russ Bray sounds quite fresh.
The stage wall and floor are designed to be a whole dartboard.
Weird.
The female commentator is Francis Hoenselaar.
Thanks.

Mardle wasn't opposed to gamesmanship.

Part has spoken about a game he had with Mardle one year at the Desert Classic (seemingly 2004). Part was on top until a break in play. During that break Mardle started playing to the crowd to get them onside. This helped Mardle regain the advantage when play resumed. I saw Mardle do similar on Sky a few times as the cameras panned to and from breaks.

I'm not complaining btw. That type of stuff doesn't bother me. And aye I was also a fan of Mardle's when he was an active player.
Remember him playing games with Kirky in their ally pally sf too, slowing him down. I was like dude you've just beaten Taylor, what is this? He has since said that he regrets it as it messed himself up. He tried tricks for sure, and I'm also not complaining.
Yep.

They say Mardle was bookie favourite to win the world title after he beat Taylor.

John Part a bit like Wade this week seemed not quite to get the respect he deserved. I never for a moment imagined he'd beat Part in the final personally.

Although in retrospect it appears obvious that Part was going to win that was not mine and others' view at the time.

IIRC, Mardle had a favourable head to head record against Part.

I personally also thought that Painter had a great chance of winning it too.

That was another great chance for wadey, bad flu and still only lost 5-4 to the legendary part.

Would have beat painter and the karate kid no doubt about it.

Painter was playing some decent stuff that week, but I would have favoured Wade to beat him too.

The BDO players did pretty well at the 2005 Masters of Darts, although Phil Taylor dominated the event. Colin Lloyd was the PDC's world number 1 and lost all 4 of his matches to the BDO players. Mardle also lost all 4 of his matches, although gave more of a fight. Scholten lost to Barneveld and Fordham, but beat Stompe and David. Scholten then lost to Fordham again in the semi final. Taylor won every match of course, beating Barney twice and Fordham twice.

The talk going into the event from some people was that Barney was better than Taylor, going by their 2005 World Championship performances. Taylor beat Barney 4-0 in sets in the group stage at the 2005 Masters of Darts (in February 2005), and then 5-2 in sets in the semi final. His wins over Fordham were 4-2 and 7-1, just a few months after their head-to-head showdown at the Circus Tavern.

Barney was never better than Taylor. It was just that Taylor was getting lazy, Barney entering the scene was just what Taylor needed: a challenge.

I'll ask.

How did you know about this tournament at the time. Online?

Because I had no clue about it until years later.

He was, although hype was responsible for a lot of that, with Mardle finally beating Taylor after years of failing to do so. Cooler heads could see that Part and Painter were playing the best darts during the event, and they were meeting each other in the semi final. Mardle openly admits that he tried to slow Kirk Shepherd down, and that it blew up in his face. Shepherd made a habit that tournament of making his opponents fail on the things they were usually solid at, like Manley saying "Terry Jenkins and Mick McGowan had match darts to beat him (Shepherd). If I get a chance, I won't miss", and then Manley missed match darts against Shepherd also. Part was a little anxious about it before the final, wanting to kill off the fairytale narrative early on.

Yes, I watched it online. There was hype about it on darts forums at the time, the old Superstars of Darts forum, and the other darts forum website (not this one). I think it was www.dartsforum.co.uk

PDC vs. BDO was such a big thing back then.

I see.

I only started visiting darts forums a few years later.

I only really visited Bobby George's blog :)

I remember the .co.uk forum. There was somebody who started every post with 'Ay up comrades'. If they're around here somewhere these days I'd like them to make themselves known.

This particular forum that we're on right now was pretty notorious for years for being virtually unmoderated as I recall, i.e. Justin Credible's domain. I think I joined this forum rather late, about 2015-2016 (yes, March 2016), and JC left in 2017 after some dispute with the mods or something, and has never posted here since.
