The Tom>Pete transition reminds me very much of the Hartnell>Trought switch, in terms of how the cast and crew speak about it. They were thrilled to see the back of the toxic presence in both cases.

Although Hartnell's difficult behaviour seems to have been an outcome of his illness. Tom was just choosing to be a dick.

I think he craved to be seen as the man but didn't really care about trying hard at it or being nice. Narcissism indications possibly? That's a very wild guess.

As you like the background stuff, you should watch the documentaries and commentaries on the DVDs. Pete and Janet are good fun in the commentaries and clearly still get along very well. Lalla Ward (second Romana) comes across as an ogre, a bad egg.

In a commentary Lalla Ward (second Romana) refers to Matthew Waterhouse (Adric) as "Matthew Waterlogged or whatever his name was". It's not nice.

Between her and Tom at his most monstrous, and the pair of them coming out of a disastrous romance at the time, the little Adric dude was given a rough time. He was only a teenager at the time. So I suspect that he was also relieved when the Pete era swept away all that.

They have put up a new Tales of the Tardis on the iplayer with the Tom/Sarah story Pyramids of Mars edited into one piece, with Ncuti and Millie bookending it with bits, in the style of the other ones they did. That's a really good story.
