The bet I used to love was "A false start in the Grand National?" The odds were around 13/8 and I'd be the only one in the shop cheering when it happened. Fuck the race!ChrisW wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 5:14 pmYou're in RobTheMalteseDart wrote: ↑Thu Apr 03, 2025 5:11 pmSuggesting a comp and not entering it ?Rob Singleton wrote: ↑Wed Apr 02, 2025 10:11 pmGood luck![]()

I managed in the bookies for years and no longer have a real interest in the race from a betting prospect. Absolutely loved it during my school years - I was glued to it and even recorded the whole broadcast on VHS. The build up to the race was spectacular, just like the F A CUP FINAL used to be.
The tradition has long gone and the doo-gooders have ruined it as a proper spectacle with most fences reduced to regulation height. Racing up the inside to Beeches with its brutal drop once you cleared the fence was for the bravest of the brave or the stupid. It's now been levelled off making it just another fence from having been one most feared.
Funny enough I just remembered the time I was at Aintree. Honest guv. True story...
Bring on the contradictions lols One of my memorable moments (although it never entered my head last week go figure) was attending the Grand National the year the IRA had the meeting abandoned. We were in one of the huge tent bars when the announcement came over the tannoy: MEETING ABANDONED MAKE YOUR WAY TO THE NEAREST EXIT....
Us and the majority refused to leave and carried on drinking as "NO SURRENDER" and "FUCK THE IRA" rang out. If our time is up we ain't running. Eventually ushered out the tent and left to our own devices (an ironic pun).
Walked across the course and picked at the odd fence and hallowed turf for some souvenirs and out on to the street to join 1,000's of others. Waited forever to board a bus and it was carnage with the Billy Boys singing upstairs and the Fenian Crew singing downstairs. The choice of up or down was easy for many. Spare a thought for the driver! A journey of huge hilarity from both sides joined as one in verse against each other in the best spirit with no animosity or fallout whatsoever. I have the programme, ticket, with bits of birch and grass in a box somewhere.
Erm. What bomb!
The race went ahead 2 days later on the Monday behind closed doors with some dignitaries attending for a photo opportunity.
The end!
